A few words to the cis people of the world
Nov. 2nd, 2010 03:29 pmIf you are a cis person, and you think of yourself as a cis person then I'd like to say "thank you". If you are a cis person who understands that the word "women" includes all women, that the word "men" includes all men, then I'd like to say "thank you". If you are a cis person who knows that each person gets to decide for themselves whether they're a "he", a "she", or a "zie", then I'd like to say "thank you". You are an ally, and you have my gratitude.
If, on the other hand, you are a cis person who doesn't think of themselves as "cis", who smashes "trans" into other words to create othering labels, who thinks that genitals override personal experience, who thinks they have the right to call me "he" or "him, then I offer you a gracious "fuck you". If you are a cis person who thinks that the opposite of "trans" is no qualifier at all, then that empty space you leave in front of "man" and "woman" embodies what your identity means to me. If your own gender is so insecure, so tenuous that you can only exist in the emptiness of the trans lives you erase, then you have no identity at all. You may not want me in your world, but I don't need you in mine.
